My first design studio project at Leeds Beckett University is the 2020 Edmund N Bacon Urban Design Awards. This is an urban design student competition open to all students of design (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students) in the U.K. This year’s design competition is focused on Germantown Philadelphia. Germantown is a city full of historical buildings, culture and a great historical story behind the whole makeup of the city. The brief particularly highlights Chelten Avenue, the heart of Germantown’s business district, as the area of focus. What was once a bubbly pedestrianized shopping district is now characterized by dilapidated shops, abandoned buildings and land parcels, and excess private parking area. The design began by looking into the history of Germantown and focusing in on Chelten Avenue. The team began looking into major issues which could be the primary source to all this catastrophe in Chelten avenue - Poverty and Crime.
