The title ‘Streets for people’ was better inclined with our proposed idea at large which was filling the avenue with people by turning it into a more interactive and engaging shopping district. The street faces issues such as lots of criminal activities, businesses close as soon as they open leading to empty storefronts and vacant buildings, lack of variety in terms of communal areas, restaurants, open green spaces (only existing park is Vernon park which isn’t visibly noticeable and accessible through Chelten Avenue.
Some of the ideas I proposed was having pockets that would accommodate small business.
Germantown was on the verge of banning food trucks and small kiosks that take up space on the streets. Having these pockets give people the opportunity to still run their businesses on the streets of Chelten Avenue bringing variety into the streets. Pocket parks are introduced to highlight areas with activities that needed expansions in the area such as the market, important buildings (library, Church, other historic buildings or organizations,) and other commercial buildings like restaurants and so on. These pockets also serve as community hubs. These parks foster community collaboration and interaction.
